Looks like it might be one cold New Years day dive
If the weather keeps up the way it's going now, it looks like my new years day dive might be a cold one! Who knows, might have to break some ice to jump in.
I am at a disadvantage compaired to the other divers that will most likely be there, they will be diving dry suits. Unfortunately I am too poor to afford one of those! A good dry suit runs around 1800$, and has to be custom fitted to the diver.
Since a dry suit is unlikely to drop into my lap in the next month, I guess that means i'm resorting to just wearing a wet suit.
For those unfamiliar with diving / dive equipment. A dry suit is well.. just that dry! You wear fleece clothing under it to stay warm and add air to it as you decend. Your body heats the air, helping insulate and keeping you warm. Where as a wet suit relies on a thin layer of water between you and your suit to stay warm. However, wet suits tend to flush quite a bit allowing more cold water to flood in.
I spent the majority of my dive money on my BCD ( Bouyancy Compensating Device" a Scuba Pro Knighthawk, and didn't even end up with enough to buy myself a nice 7mm wet suit. So that means most of the time I end up renting a 7mm suit, which isn't too expensive.., just inconvenient.
Diving is worth the cold though, plus the water is bound to be warmer then it is outside, and the thermocline should be relatively deep. I doubt we will be doing any deep dives so I shouldn't hit it, if I do I shouldn't hit the second one ( unless we drop down to 130ft or something ).
Hopefully I can budget myself a drysuit next year, well worth the money!
